Iringa baskets feature Finnish design and the traditional weaving technique of Iringa, Tanzania. The fusion of Tanzanian handicraft and Nordic elegance supports women through flexible, safe work and extra income for families and communities.
Handmade natural colour Iringa basket with lid is woven from milulu grass that grows along riverbanks in Tanzania. The milulu grass is carefully harvested and dried before weaving into beautiful, robust baskets.
The colour of milulu grass changes over time. When the basket is first woven, the grass has a shade of green. Over time, the colour will change from green to brown as shown in the product images. This process typically takes 1-2 months.

Iringa Basket with Lid
Material: Milulu
Milulu grass (Eleocharis acutangula) is a reed like flowering plant belonging to the genus of spikerushes that grows in tropical wetlands. The strong reed is woven into baskets with the traditional weaving technique in the village of Iringa in Tanzania. Our Iringa collection is aeshetically pleasing and functional. Baskets made of milulu have beautiful structure and the reed makes the much stiffer than Kiondo baskets. Iringa baskets can't be folded.
Mifuko was founded in 2009 by two Finnish designers. From the beginning, they were inspired to combine modern design with traditional Kenyan handcraft and fair trade.
